My Hometown

Hey José! How is it going? Even though I was born in Singapore and lived there for six years, I do not consider it to be my hometown. I think of San Mateo, California as my hometown because I have the most memories here. Although San Mateo is only a small suburb, there is a lot to do. Since the city isn’t too big, getting from one place to another does not take too long. I really like San Mateo because things are pretty calm and nothing particular happens. Compared to big cities like San Francisco, San Mateo has a low crime rate and is relatively clean. There is also a lot to do in downtown San Mateo. Because of our diverse city, there are many different types of restaurants. In addition to restaurants, there are also many different places to buy things. A few years ago, a movie theatre was built in the middle of downtown San Mateo so there are always a lot of people around the area. There is also a park near downtown San Mateo. There is a playground, a baseball field, and several barbeque pits at the park. Although there are a lot of things to do at the park, I rarely go to the park because there is rarely anything interesting that occurs there. That pretty much sums up what my hometown is like. How is your hometown?

My Hobbies

Hi José! How is it going? Because of my busy schedule, I rarely have free time. When I do have free time, there are several things I like to do. During the weekends, I like to hang out with my friends. Sometimes we would go watch a movie or just do things together. When my friends are busy, I like to play on my guitar. I just started learning how to play the guitar this year so I am not too good yet. When I have free time, I would look on the web for songs I can learn to play on my guitar. Even though I am not too good with the guitar, I still enjoy playing it when I have nothing to do. When I am done with the school year, I will have a lot of free time over the summer. I hope to spend this time practicing playing the guitar and hopefully getting better at it. Another one of my hobbies is building little projects. I like making little toys and figures out of wood and other things. When I am bored and I don’t feel like doing anything in particular, I usually just watch TV. My favorite TV show is The Simpsons. I like The Simpsons because the characters always do funny things. Do you like The Simpsons? What do you do during your spare time?

My family

My mother´s name is Isabel and my father´s name was Manuel, he died in 1982 when I was nine years old. I´ve got a sister, she is married. I also have got two beautiful nephews, I often play with them. My brother-in-law is a busy person and I hardly ever see him, but when I see him, we laugh a lot. We go to Albacete in holy week, where we play the drum, eat and drink a lot. I’m very lucky because I´ve got a funny family.

My J0b

Hello again! I currently do not have a job, but in previous years I have done many different things. During my second and third year in high school, I worked with a youth foundation in my town. I would go to a middle school three days a week and help tutor struggling sixth graders. I got to meet a lot of interesting people, but after awhile I didn’t really like the job. Since the students were not particularly motivated, tutoring became more of a babysitting job. On the days that I went there I would spend most of my time telling the students to stay on task. Because I didn’t particularly like nagging the little kids to do work, I decided to quit. From time to time, I do short term jobs like helping upgrade and maintaining website for certain corporations. Besides working for pay, I also volunteer at the local library. I have been volunteering there for four years. Once a week I go to the library and help out in the childrens department. I do many different things like making posters, making animal cut-outs, and organizing books. Although the job seems interesting, after four years, the tasks seem to be repetitive. Right now, I am just waiting to graduate from high school and finally move away from home. What do you do as a mechanical engineer?

My Family

My family is originally from Hong Kong, and most of my relatives still lives there. Last winter, we took a trip back to Hong Kong to visit my grandparents and other relatives. We spent Christmas and new years there and we all had a lot of fun. In the community I live in, I am considered to have a very big immediate family. Unlike most people in my city, I have three other siblings. I have two older sisters and an older brother. Being the youngest one in my family can be good and bad at the same time. Because I am the youngest, I am often treated like a baby. I am treated most kindly by my parents, and I also get a lot of attention. Since I am the youngest, my parents also have a lot of expectations of me. Having the experience of raising three other kids, my parents always try to get me on the path to success. Even though my siblings are all very successful, my parents still expect me to be more successful than them. My eldest sister currently works at Apple Computers and my other sister works at Applied Biosystems. My brother is currently attending a university in New York. In my opinion I am not a smart as my other siblings but I still try to do whatever is expected of me to the best of my abilities. What is your family like?

Introduction from Arnold

Hi José! My name is Arnold Yim. Since we have the same topic for the first post, this post will be very similar to my post in spanish. I was born in Singapore and I am seventeen years old. I have two older sisters and an older brother. My parents and siblings are born Hong Kong. I lived in Singapore during my childhood and when I was six years old, my family moved to the United States. When we moved to the United States, we decided to live in San Mateo (a city near San Francisco). My parents were worried about my safety and insisted that I learn Kung Fu. Right now I have a black belt. I live near my high school and I walk to the school each morning. I attend a high school called Aragon High School, and this year is my last year in high school. I know how to speak and to write in three languages and am learning Spanish. I like my class of Spanish a lot but my favorite subject is mathematics. I’ve taken several college level math courses like Ordinary Differential Equations and Linear Algebra . I also like engineering and I am currently the president of a robotics club at my school. Every year we compete at a regional event and we usually do really well. Heres a picture of what the robot we are building looks like, we are not complete yet.

The objective of the robot is to launch balls inro a hoop.
